DESCRIPTION
Born in Hawaii but raised near Vancouver, Neil studied Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. During his degree, he completed co-op work terms in both Vancouver and Japan.
Neil concluded his studies with a life-changing computer security project. An in-depth security analysis of a supposedly “secure” smart card laundry system uncovered a previously unknown vulnerability that allowed free laundry. The research was presented at DEFCON 18, after which he shifted his professional focus toward software development—primarily web technologies—and computer security.
After more than twelve years of software development, product creation, and community leadership through NP-X Solutions and other professional roles, Neil has gained broad experience across organisational management, business analysis, product and system architecture, systems thinking, and stakeholder communication. Much of his work involves bringing clarity to complex technical and organisational challenges.
During this time, Neil was invited to contribute to senior leadership committees across four organisations. These were not positions he actively pursued, but opportunities where existing leadership sought his operational perspective and advisory input. He sees this as a reflection of the collaborative, systems-oriented approach he brings to the organisations and communities he serves.
Today, Neil continues to build products, advise organisations, support communities, and never quite loses the urge to understand how things work.
